Total solar eclipse of August 12, 2045

A coast-to-coast total eclipse with long totality: the shadow enters northern California in the morning and leaves Florida in the afternoon, then crosses the Caribbean and South America.

States in the path

NASA's decade-table entry reads “[Total: s US, Haiti, Dominican Rep., Venezuela, Guyana, Fr. Guyana, Suriname, Brazil]”. NASA doesn't list the states, so we worked them out.

Our calculationNASA's path-table edge points joined by straight lines and tested against US Census 2024 state boundaries. We then tested every 0.02-degree point in each nearby state with our own calculation from NASA's elements. Dashed states are possible intersections: no tested point lies more than 5 km (projected, in NASA's eclipse plane) inside the path edge.

The path runs from northern California through Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Shaded band: our calculation from NASA's Besselian elements (inside the Moon's shadow at maximum, Sun above the horizon); center line from NASA's path table. Outlines: US Census and Natural Earth (drawing only).

US city points are the Census Bureau's internal point for each place. Local times in this table were computed at build time with the IANA time zone database version 2025c; the checker uses your browser's own time zone data, which may differ. Clock rules can change before 2045.

Questions about 2045

Which states does the August 12, 2045 path cross?

NASA's decade-table entry reads “[Total: s US, Haiti, Dominican Rep., Venezuela, Guyana, Fr. Guyana, Suriname, Brazil]”, without naming states. Our check of NASA's path coordinates against Census boundaries finds 14 states clearly in the path: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah. New Mexico is a possible intersection: only a sliver within 5 km (projected) of the path edge, which is within the uncertainty of our method.

How long is totality in the US in 2045?

NASA's path table gives the longest US center-line duration among its two-minute points as 6m 06s, in Florida. NASA's greatest duration for the whole eclipse is 6m 06s, at 27°20'N, 080°21'W, which is in Florida by our check against Census boundaries. That's a different point from NASA's greatest eclipse, 25°54.9'N, 078°32.1'W.
